Propeller - Part 1

Propeller - Part 1

TLDR

  • Cleaned propeller flange
  • Assembled propeller hub

Details

While I am still trying to resolve the engine ECU problem, I decided to start the propeller installation to take my mind off the other problem for a bit.

For this, I am following Evan’s offcial build video series, although some of the steps seem to be out of date.

Cleaned propeller flange

This part of straightforward. I thoroughly cleaned the engine propeller flange with a rag and some 99% IPA.

Intalling mounting bolts

I installed the mounting bolts with the required nord-lock washers, and the lug sleeve. The propeller came with the jig to pull the lug sleeve into place, so this part was relatively easy.

One note is that both Evan’s video and the installation manual called for anti-seize on the lug, but the kit did not come with any. Fortunately the kit from Sling included multiple tunes of copper slip, so I used a small amount of that on the lug.

Propeller Hub Assembly

3 different parts needs to sandwich together for this step: the prop flange, the hub, and the slip ring.

The hub is sandwiched in the center, and it has 3 wires reaching out to the flange, as well as the slip ring.

On Evan’s video, the 3 parts are not physically secured together. But on my kit, the hub is physically secured to the flange with 3 bolts. There might have been a hardward revision update since the video was made. So it’s a reminder to follow the manual over the video.

This is the part where the hub will connect to the flange with 3 screws. The flange comes with 3 countersink screws. A tag is attached to the screws to remind me that they need to be replaced with longer, pan head screws later on.

So I first connected the 3 wires between the hub and the flange, nestled the wires so they are not pinched when putting together the parts, then I used 3 screws per the instruction to secure the hub to the flange.

Then, I connected the slip ring to the hub, and secured it with 3 countersink screws.

Next time I will probably connect the whole assmebly to the engine.
