Installing Propeller

Installing Propeller

TLDR

  • Installed the propeller

Details

Intalled the airmaster propeller today. Most of the process was very smooth, but I ran into a small hiccup and had to re-install the #2 blade twice.

Greasing

80% of the time are spent in greasing the blades.

The hub and the blades must be greased in a very particular way. I followed the Airmaster’s service instruction on greasing here

The three blades are packed full of grease. I chose to use the Mobilgrease 28 which is the same type that they used in the factory.

Torquing

After greasing each blade, I put them on the hub and torqued them to 15 NM.

After torquing to 15 NM, #1 and #3 are commpletely seat flush with the hub, but the #2 has about 1mm of sticking out.

Airmaster has a very good installation manual, and in the manually it clearly stated the sticking out is not acceptable, and it’s likely because I packed too much grease in the blade.

So I reversed all the work from blade 2 and took it off the airplane. I used a few lint free towels to clean off the grease from both the blade and the hub, then reapplied the grease but just a little less this time.

The second try went ok. I torqued the blade to 15 nm and it seat flush with the hub.

I moved on to install the lock plate and safety wired the screws holding the lock plaet in place. All done!
