Coolant System Fluid Lines - Part 1
TLDR
- Installed the oil pressure sensor line
- Started to fit coolant fluid lines
Details
Pressure Sensor Line
On the oil sensor, there is a line going into the airbox. This is used to measure the air pressure and calculate the differential oil pressure (I think).
This line goes into the airbox via a hose nipple-M6 fitting.
I cleaned the fitting and applied a new layer of Loctite 577, then screwed it onto the Rotax airbox. The torque is 5 Nm per the Rotax manual.
I used a zebra clamp here. When I got home after work and watched a few videos on clamp best practices, I realized that spring-style hose clamps work better than zebra clamps. I bought a bunch of spring clamps online; once they arrive, I will swap out the zebra clamps.
Fitting Coolant Fluid Lines
This is again one of those tasks that looks easy but takes a huge amount of time, mainly due to the tight space for fitting the lines behind and around the engine. I got dozens of scratches on my arms as I worked on fitting the lines for the coolant system.
The lines are made of silicone and supplied by Aerospace Innovations. They are pre-bent, which helps when fitting them into their final position. Even so, it still took a lot of effort to get the lines where they need to go.
I made a bunch of rubber spacers to separate the wires from the lines, and the lines from metal parts, etc. I have not tightened any clamps yet because the final positions are not set yet, but I have a general idea of how things should fit.
The critical component—the coolant radiator—installs onto the bottom cowling. So, I have to pause on the line fitting and actually finish installing the cowling; then, I will be able to finalize the position for the radiator. Once the radiator’s position is set, I will be able to route the fluid lines to their final location properly and trim the lines as necessary.
Heat Sleeve
One more thing: I needed to buy some heat sleeve for the coolant lines going across the exhaust. I took some measurements for the lines’ diameters and placed the order with Summit Racing. They are not cheap. I hope I measured everything correctly.
With the bottom cowling on, the coolant line is too close to the exhaust. This part must be rerouted.
