Exhaust Pipe - Part 1

Exhaust Pipe - Part 1

TLDR

  • Started modifying the exhaust pipe.

Details

On the Rotax 915, Sling wants me to cut off a section of the straight exhaust pipe and replace it with a bent pipe.

Measuring

Sling provided the measurement for the cut (32.4mm). I measured it from the root of the pipe to just under a welded cover plate.

Testing the Cut

I tested the first cut using a Milwaukee M12 die grinder and a 2-inch cutoff disc. The disc was able to cut the metal, but it got hot really fast and didn’t make much progress. So I stopped for the day and started to research on Facebook and with Gemini.

Based on the answers I received, I bought a few more tools:

  • A corded angle grinder
  • A 4.5-inch cutoff disc
  • A set of new 2-inch metal grinding discs

I plan to use the larger grinder to cut most of the pipe and clear the weld lines. Then I will use the smaller metal cutoff disc to slowly clear the remaining pipe under the cover plate. Hopefully, this will bring the pipe to the required length.
